| The Detroit Section has participated in the Olympiad since 1985. The
administration of the local process is carried out by members of the Section's
Education Committee. For fourteen years ,1985 through 1998, Professor Richard
Potts of U of M-Dearborn headed up the effort. Then, in 1999, Professor
Mark De Camp, also from U of M-Dearborn took over the program in anticipation
of Dr. Potts' retirement in 2000. The Olympiad is a three tier testing process
leading to the four student U.S. National team. Phase one is a local exam
from which the Section chooses (nominates) ten students to participate in
the second phase, the National exam. Across the country, a total of 9,000
to 10,000 students take the local exam. The nominees from each
participating Section take the National exam in late April. .The number here
is between 900 and 1000. The top twenty are picked to attend the two week
Study Camp. The four person U.S. team is picked from these twenty.
Thanks are due to the Matilda Wilson Fund and the Ford Motor Company for their long time financial sponsorship which have made possible the generous awards to the winners, runners-up, schools and teachers. The Section recognizes the "top ten" students, their parents and teachers at a buffet dinner after the National exam. Study Camp attendees and their families are also invited to the Section's joint May Meeting with the members of the Canadian Institute of Chemists. |
