APRIL SECTION MEETING

SPEAKER:

Felix Schneider (USFDA, Ret)

TOPIC:

Food Safety: Fact and Fiction

SITE:

St Clair County Community College
Memorial Room,  Clara E. Mackenzie Bldg
Erie and McMorran, Port Huron, MI

TIME & DATE

6-9 pm, April 19th

We frequently see concerns raised in the popular press, TV and radio media about food safety. For example the recent recalls of peanut butter, spinach and melons. Beyond the headlines or lead in there is little substantive information. What is happening to our Food Safety? Some of these issues are real and others are not much more than an urban legend. The discussion will cover pesticides, food additives, bacteria,  biotechnology, mycotoxins, allergens, irradiation and nutritional supplements. You may be surprised as to what are the public concerns as opposed to the ones that will most effect your health. Mr. Schneider is retired after a 42-year career with FDA. He held positions as Analytical Chemist, Supervisory Chemist, Research Coordinator and Laboratory Director with FDA. He served in the Cincinnati, Chicago and Detroit FDA Laboratories. He received a BS degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. He is a long time active member of Anachem and the Detroit Section.

After Felix's presentation, a discussion of activities related to the northern portion of the Detroit section will take place to determine interest and needs. Larry Mavis and Joe Gibbons (ACS members with 43 years of combined teaching experience) will wrap things up with a tour of the newly renovated chemistry facility (portion of $13 million Capital Outlay  Project), featuring new labs and a "dreamy" instruments room (GC,GCMS, ICAP, AA, HPLC, and FTIR) you won't want to miss. This renovation was inspired in part by Macomb CC and Kettering University facilities.

Directions to SC4, the location of our April Meeting:
1. Take I-94 North to Exit #274/WATER ST toward PORT HURON.
2. Turn Right onto WATER ST.
3. Bear Right on 10TH ST.
4. Turn Left on LAPEER AVE. and then left onto ERIE ST.

KIDS & CHEMISTRY NEWS

Thank you Henkel! The Detroit ACS Kids & Chemistry group is extremely grateful for a generous grant from Henkel’s Make an Impact on Tomorrow (MIT) Children’s Program. The $3,250 award is the largest award ever received by Kids & Chemistry and will help us to extend our outreach program in the coming year. Our special thanks go to cochair Gina Ludwig for her work in obtaining this grant. May 3, 2007, Rouge Water Festival. On Thursday, May 3, Kids & Chemistry will again be participating in the Rouge Water Festival program on the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus. This is another week day event and targets 5th graders from throughout Wayne County. Felix Schneider (US FDA-retd) is our organizer for this event as he has been in the past. The program will run from approximately 9:00 to 2:00. Lunch will be provided. We have been asked to run two labs simultaneously as ours is one of the more popular programs and one of the few hands-on programs. That means we are looking for a large group of volunteers. If you would like to participate please respond to Felix directly at: felixschn@wowway.com. Royal Oak Career Fair. We extend our thanks to Felix Schneider and Charles Deak who manned our table at the Royal Oak Career Fair on March 7. They passed out ACS career literature and provided interviews to more than 100 students. It was another successful program.

If you would like to be placed on our e-mail list for future events, please send a note to Walter Siegl at wsiegl@sbcglobal.net; we always welcome new participants.

CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS FOR A CHAMPION SECTION

In January, we wrote that the Detroit Section had been voted the winner of the Outstanding Performance for a Medium Large section. That’s our ACS equivalent of winning the Oscar or the Super Bowl. In line with that, we are trying to bring some sort of reward to our members for their hard work. Please, show up at a volunteer event this year. You may be pleasantly surprised, as we figure out what sort of give-aways the Section can afford. One item that we have already made arrangements for – but that you will have to purchase yourself – is a championship ring (sorry, we don’t have the budget to give one to every member).

The Champs Division of Jostens has made us a ring design with the ACS Phoenix and your initials on one side, the Old English, Detroit “D” and the year on the other, and the words, “American Chemical Society Detroit Outstanding Section” on the bezel. The prices? For a men’s or women’s white lustrium - $119. For a men’s and women’s suncast goldtone - $149. For a 10 karat women’s yellow or white gold - $239. For a men’s 10 karat yellow or white gold - $329. You choose the stone you’d like. How do you get this symbol of Detroit ACS supremacy? Call Cindy Johnson of Jostens at: 1-800-854-7464, extension 6634, or e-mail her at: cindy.johnson@jostens.com. She’ll take your choices, ring size, and credit card info right there over the phone. Shipping takes about six weeks. While this sort of trophy may not be for everyone, they are gorgeous rings that our members can certainly feel proud to wear.

The offer is good at least all through 2007, and will go beyond if we get the ‘okay’ from Jostens. If you attend any of our ACS events this year and want to see one of the men’s rings up close, Section Chair Mark Benvenuto will be wearing one. He has said that as mentioned in the old song, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown,” he would “like to wave his diamond ring in front of everybody’s nose” (unfortunately for Mark, he’s simply got a blue stone in his ACS ring). But, find him, and you can get a good look. Again, congratulations Detroit! Thanks for all the work we’ve done, and here’s to another good year.

FOCUS 2007

SUMMER WORKSHOPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY TEACHERS

The American Chemical Society is sponsoring teacher training workshops this summer throughout the country for high school chemistry teachers. Two types of workshops are available: Chemistry in the Community and Advanced High School Chemistry Teacher Training Workshops. In each workshop teachers are led by experienced secondary and/or college chemical educators who provide participants with information and tools for teaching inquiry-based learning.

Advanced High School Chemistry, Teacher Training Workshops, led by experienced secondary and college chemical educators, provide participants with tools for teaching an inquiry-based honors or advanced high school chemistry course such as IB or AP. The activities used in these three-day workshops are from the ACS college text, Chemistry which emphasizes short experiments to introduce chemical concepts, and promote active and collaborative learning. All interested advanced high school chemistry teachers are encouraged to apply, regardless of current textbook.

Chemistry in the Community, Teacher Training Workshops are designed for teachers using or intending to use the ACS textbook, "Chemistry in the Community". In these five-day workshops, experienced ChemCom teacher leaders provide expert instruction and hands-on experience with many of ChemCom’s activities and laboratory investigations.

There is a $50.00 registration fee for each workshop, which includes all materials, meals and on-site housing. The dates and locations appear below.

• June 24 California State University, Northridge, CA

• July 8 Concordia University, Ann Arbor, MI

• July 8 Greater Hartford Academy of Math and Science, Hartford, CT

• July 15 University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS  2007 AND BEYOND!

The American Chemical Society has developed an exciting new Strategic Plan in support of the ACS Vision: "Improving people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry." The plan was recently released at www.chemistry.org/strategicplan and will shape the Society's strategic direction through 2007 and beyond.

All ACS members were invited to contribute to the plan, and the final version reflects thousands of their comments and survey responses. The document has a built-in feedback mechanism where, through the Web, members can continue to make suggestions about the plan as it evolves from year to year. The Strategic Plan also features links to numerous ACS programs, so that readers can see part of how the Society plans to accomplish the plan’s objectives. There is a new external focus in this Strategic Plan that calls upon ACS members to use their science to "transform the world" for the benefit of Earth and its people. As in the past, the plan pledges to continue to provide information, programs, products, and services to give members the highest value for their involvement.

The plan sets out three areas for the Society and for its members to work towards:

• Enabling Scientific Progress: To provide the highest quality education, knowledge, and tools to facilitate solutions for major scientific challenges safely and sustainably

• Fostering Community: To strengthen the power of association by connecting people around the world in chemistry-related disciplines

• Transforming the World: To focus on challenges and opportunities at the intersection of chemistry and society that improve the quality of human life

You are invited to visit www.chemistry.org/strategicplan to review the plan and to "join the discussion" regarding the overall plan and its themes. Together, through collaborative engagement, all members can continue to benefit from their involvement with ACS and improve people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry as well.

INTRODUCTION TO CHEM-INSIGHT™

In response to the growing demand for scientific experts in the legal, accounting and consulting fields, ACS is launching ChemInsight™ – a scientific experts matching service – at the Chicago National Meeting.Legal professionals often find themselves involved in litigation with scientific topics which a lay person would have difficulty understanding. They resolve this problem by hiring experts to assist in the understanding of scientific issues, make pre-trial preparations or provide testimony to persuade a jury during trial. In these roles, experts often play a critical role in determining the course and outcome of a case. Demand for experts is not limited to the legal domain. In the wake of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, forensic accountants and consulting firms also seek experts to provide insights into the sciences, technologies, processes, and other areas with strong scientific content. As chemical and allied sciences increasingly find their way into commercially successful products and services, the demand for scientific experts to help legal and other professionals is bound to increase.

Initially, ChemInsight™ plans to offer two services:

1. Directory Listing Service, which would promote experts through a free search on ChemInsight.org and through a free print directory distributed to over 60,000 law, forensic accounting and consulting firms;

2. Expert Matching Service, whereby ChemInsightTM would contract with law, accounting and consulting firms to conduct a customized search to identify the most relevant experts who best meet their needs. By helping scientists in chemical and allied sciences gain access to opportunities beyond their core disciplines, ChemInsight™ would enable them to earn additional income and solve challenging problems in a new context, thereby enhancing their visibility beyond the scientific community. This would also help legal, consulting, and accounting firms solve the ever increasing number of cases and problems involving complex scientific topics. If you have expertise in a relevant science area, ACS invites you to list with ChemInsight™. Listing with ChemInsight™ offers several advantages over other expert services in the market, such as:

1 Exclusive focus on chemical and allied sciences – there is no other service that caters exclusively to these sciences

2 Offered by the American Chemical Society – the world’s largest scientific organization

3 Lowest listing fees among comparable services

4 Attractive member discounts on top of the already low listing fees

5 Active promotion through the web and print media, including:
oCustom-designed www.cheminsight.org website providing comprehensive search, registration and profile editing capabilities o Direct access to 60,000 legal, accounting, and consulting professionals through the free distribution of the National Directory of Scientific Experts
o Multiple ACS websites that generate over 110 million visitors annually
o Journals and magazines relating to intellectual property and several other relevant areas of law
o Premier legal websites and legal symposia/conferences
o Direct contacts and promotions to business consulting and forensic accounting firms with interest in the chemical enterprise

ChemInsight™ is a new initiative of the Office of New Business Development (NBD) of the Society. Thomas Smith serves as the Manager of ChemInsight™. For more information, please visit www.ChemInsight.org.
