Detroit Section Awards

Midgley Award
The Midgley Award, founded in 1965,  is presented to a scientist or engineer for outstanding research contributions in the field of chemistry related to the automotive industry. The Award was originally funded by a grant from Ethyl Corporation. In late 1994, the estate of George F. Brewer, himself a Midgley Medalist, provided a bequest to the fund to provide a cash award in addition to the Midgley Medal. The Award is named in honor of Thomas Midgley Jr., an Ethyl Corporation Vice President who was one of the most creative, far seeing scientist of his times. The Midgley Award is presented to the recipient at a special program held in his/her honor in the fall of the year. The Award consists of a medal and a $1000 honorarium. A post program reception allows attendees a chance to meet the awardee.

Distinguished Service Award (DSA)
The Section's Distinguished Service Award was founded in 1978. The Award is given annually to a member for long and meritorious service to the Section. In practice, the award has usually been given to a Section member who is or who has served as a member of the Executive Committee. It is usually given in May as a part of the joint meeting of the Section with the Canadian CIC. This event  also honors outstanding local students and others whose performance has been outstanding,  To go to a list of DSA awardees with links to selected bios & photos, click here.

Fifty and Sixty Year Member Awards
Each  year the Section presents its new 50 year members with Certificates at a May program. The program is a joint dinner meeting with the Ontario Section of the CIC usually held in Canada. The Awardees are invited along with a guest to the meeting to receive their Certificate as a part of the program. A list of the current year  members is provided at this link.

Chemistry Olympiad
The Section has been a highly successful participant in the ACS sponsored National Chemistry Olympiad since 1985. The program is administered by the Section's Education Committee with financial help of generous grants from the Matilda Wilson Fund and the Ford Motor Company. Ten high school students are chosen, on the basis of a local exam, to participate in a National exam. The top twenty students countrywide on the National exam attend a two week Study Camp at the air Force Academy. Four students are picked from the twenty to represent the United States in the International Chemistry Olympiad. More information about the Olympiad process is available here. A list of local students who participated in the Study Camp is also available.
Science Fair Awards
Each year the Section, through its Environmental and Safety Committee, participates in the judging of entries in Detroit Metro Science Fair. The Committee members judge in the Senior Division of the Fair and pick out and rate only those projects in the area of Environmental Chemistry. Current year winners and more about the judging activities can be found here.

Salutes to Excellence
Every year the Detroit Local Section of the American Chemical Society honors members that have gone above and beyond the call of duty. These volunteers have taken time and energy out of their busy schedules to provide assistance and resources to the Section in various roles. Salutes to Excellence is an award program that gives ACS members an opportunity to conduct an event within their communities that recognizes the positive impact on everyday life made by a product of chemistry, a practitioner of chemistry, or a place of importance in chemistry. A central part of the event is the  presentation  of a commemorative plaque, furnished by Office of Community Activities, for the honorees for the chemistry achievement being honored.
